QuickTips - CPTS vs. CEH Training and Certification
Unlike almost any other IT problem an organization may face, a security breach is far more serious than a broken router or a crashed hard drive which can be routinely remedied. After all, information assets such as customer databases, trade secrets and intellectual property are probably the most valuable assets on a commercial organization’s balance sheet; or, in the case of government or military entities, their databases contain some of the world’s most sensitive secrets. Information assets are usually the worst things to lose because when they are stolen, they are probably not insured and invariably create irrecoverable or irreversible damage.

How do we make sure we are secure?
Penetration Testing is essentially the task undertaken by a network specialist who thinks like the bad guys. He/she will use tools and methodologies, new and old, to probe a network enterprise in search of weaknesses. A comprehensive Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Test exercise should also incorporate software and application short falls and as well as the human element.

A Penetration Test on any outside connections to your institution will test your defenses against thousands of known utilities and techniques from the ever-growing hacker community. The result is a preventative report that will identify the severity of the deficiencies in your network defenses and a comparison with other institutions’ results. Regularly scheduled penetration tests are an essential component in your information security program.

What are the differences between CEH and CPTS training?
"Out-of'-the-box" Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) training doesn't provide the complete set of skills to protect information assets. Often these courses are not taught by security experts, or the curriculum is out-of-date.

Distinctions
CPTS details the differences between a hacker and a Penetration Tester and the types of procedures followed by the professional penetration tester in assessing the vulnerabilities of computer systems.

Unlike other courses that focus on the ‘how to’ of hacking (i.e. techniques and tools used by script kiddies to compromise systems), CPTS training places equal emphasis on the ‘how to’ of penetration testing.

CPTS is designed to develop the candidate’s understanding of penetration testing methodology and the skills necessary for a professional to perform penetration testing to verify system threats and vulnerabilities.

Differences
The distinctions above illustrate the unique viewpoint of CPTS which produces professionals who understand hacking, hackers and penetration testing; not just “script kiddies”.

Instructors - The CPTS philosophy is to deliver what the student needs when he or she needs it using the best possible means. CPTS instructors immerse themselves deeply into their specialty, i.e. security. They practice what they teach; they perform penetration tests and work in the hands-on arena of security. In contrast, a similarly positioned class delivered by a non-Mile2 partner is likely to have an instructor who can only teach what is in the book because he/she is required to maintain “general" training skills in order to teach a myriad of other topics between each security class which may be only once every two or three months.

Courseware - CPTS material is updated continuously and usually printed a week or two before the class. Security threats change daily and Mile2 courseware is designed to adapt. When a serious vulnerability manifests, CPTS will cover it. This is one of the biggest distinctions between the CPTS and CEH as the latter is printed in bulk.

Laboratories - CPTS has in-depth laboratories designed to make you a better security professional. The laboratories are designed to make the students think on their feet; the IT security business demands this because most hacking tools do not work the same way every time. Our laboratories are designed to make an individual work through those issues faced in the real world. CEH laboratories do not offer the same depth of understanding in real world penetration testing.
