QuickTips - Six Reasons you should upgrade to SQL Server 2008

Only a few years after the long anticipated SQL Server 2005 release...Microsoft SQL Server 2008 is here. So why should you upgrade only a few years after a major (and long overdue) product release? Well, there are actually a lot of improvements that make SQL Server 2008 a move worth making, here are my first six reasons...

Policy Based Management
Policy based management simplifies the management of multiple instances of SQL Server from a single location. It makes it easy to create policies that handle security, database options, object naming conventions, and other settings at a very granular level. Also, it is now easier to monitor servers for compliance and prevent undesirable changes to the servers.

Data Compression
Compression has come a long way in the last few years, and in SQL Server 2008 data compression has improved so you can reduce the amount of space needed to store tables and indexes. Data compression does not require that any changes be made to the applications in order to be used.

Resource Governor
This is a great tool that allows you to allocate resources (memory, CPU) to the applications where you need them most. This enables predictable performance to be maintained and helps avoid performance from being negatively affected by any resource-intense applications or processes.

Hot-Add CPUs and Hot-Add Memory
Hot-Add CPUs (available in the 64 bit edition), allows CPUs to be dynamically added to servers as needed, without shutting down the servers or limiting client connections. Hot-Add Memory allows memory to be added in the same way as Hot-Add CPU.

Server Group Management
This allows T-SQL queries to be issued against multiple servers from a single Central Management Server, which simplifies administration. You can stream results of multi-server queries into a single result set or into multiple result sets.

Extended Events
The extended events infrastructure provides an in depth troubleshooting tool that enables administrators to address difficult-to-solve problems more efficiently. This allows us to investigate excessive CPU usage, deadlocks, and timeouts, as well as many other issues. This data can be correlated with Windows events to obtain a more complete picture that will aid in problem resolution.
