What the clearance levels mean, how the process actually works, and how to find cleared cyber work.

The short answer

What are clearance cybersecurity jobs?

Clearance cybersecurity jobs are security roles that require a government security clearance — most often with defence, intelligence and federal agencies, or with the contractors that support them. Because the pool of cleared candidates is small and a clearance takes time to grant, cleared talent stays scarce and these roles are persistently hard to fill.

That scarcity is the opportunity. An employer with a cleared requirement is choosing from a far shorter list than an employer hiring commercially, and being able to demonstrate capability clearly matters more when the field is that narrow.

The levels

Clearance levels explained

Three levels and one additional screening step you will see attached to postings.

  • Secret

The level you will see most often across defence and contractor cybersecurity roles.

  • Top Secret

Required where the work touches more sensitive national security information.

  • TS/SCI

Top Secret with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information, granted per compartment.

  • Polygraph

An additional screening step attached to some roles — not a clearance level in itself.

A posting will state the level it requires and whether it must already be held or can be obtained. Read that line first — it decides whether the role is open to you today.

The process

How to get a security clearance

The single most important thing to understand: you cannot apply for one yourself.

  • You need a sponsor

A clearance is initiated by an employer or agency with a cleared requirement, for a specific role. There is no route to getting cleared first and looking afterwards — which reshapes the job search entirely.

  • Eligibility is assessed

The process examines your background against established criteria. It is an assessment, not a purchase, and no course or service can grant one.

  • It takes time

Sponsorship, investigation and adjudication all take time, and an employer who sponsors is making a real investment in you. Plan your search accordingly.

Because sponsorship is the gate, the practical move is to target employers who sponsor — not to try to arrive already cleared.

Where the work is

Cleared roles and employers

Cleared cyber work sits with government agencies directly and with the private contractors delivering against government programmes.
Contractors are frequently the more accessible entry point, and they sponsor.

Standing out for cleared roles

When the candidate pool is this small, the differentiator is rarely another year of experience — it is being able to show precisely what you can do. Verified skills give a sponsoring employer something concrete to justify the investment against.

It depends entirely on the work. Secret is the most common across defence and contractor roles; Top Secret and TS/SCI apply where the work touches more sensitive information. The posting will state the level it needs.
Through a sponsoring employer or agency. A clearance is initiated for a specific role by an organisation with a cleared requirement, and your background is then assessed against established criteria.
No. There is no route to obtaining a clearance independently, and no course or service can provide one. Finding a sponsor is the first step, not the second.
Yes. Contractors in particular hire at junior level and sponsor clearances, because the cleared pool is too small to fill from experience alone.
Cleared roles compete for a much smaller pool of candidates, which affects what employers offer. The salary data page is the place to compare against your role and level. See cybersecurity salary data

Give a sponsoring employer something concrete

In a candidate pool this small, showing exactly what you can do counts for more than another
line of experience. Build the record before the conversation.
